The No Pedals Balance Bike
Gaining in popularity with parents is the bike with no pedals – namely theĀ balance bike. Balance bikes are also known as walker bikes, runner bikes or training bikes.

I’m sure we all have memories of trying ever so hard to learn to ride a bike. No doubt a lot of people will recall grazed elbows and bruised knees as the metal contraption took on a life of it’s own and dumped it’s rider in a hedge or somewhere less welcoming.
Being a child of the seventies, my formative cycling years were spent on an old tricycle. Three wheels was great, however the new breed of two wheeler balance bikes give kids a bit more freedom and control. The design of the bikes do away with the need for stabilisers and the child propels themselves along by foot power on the ground as opposed to pedals. This gives the child a more natural way of finding their balance as opposed to stabilisers.
The balance bike is designed for toddlers up to the age of around six years and are lightweight and well designed. They come in a variety of materials including wood and steel. The wooden bikes are very popular and look more traditional. ‘Motorbike’ style balance bikes are also available.
One of the best features of balance bikes is that children instinctively know what to do once they get on them. There is practically no learning whatsoever which means they can get on and start having fun and enjoying cycling right away. Balance bikes also dispense with the need for stabilizers. Children are more inclined to learn at their own pace with this kind of bike.
Balance bikes make a great gift for children between the ages of two and six and the range of styles means there should be something to suit everyone and the great thing about a bike is that it can be suited to either boys or girls.
Most importantly, check your child is well protected when on their bike. The number one essential piece of kit is a helmet. Lightweight cycling helmets for children are relatively inexpensive now and should be the next thing on your shopping list after you have purchased a bike.
A balance bike sets a child up for many happy years of cycling as an adult and instinctively teaches them the basics of balance and cycling technique. A balance bike is a gift your child will love. So remember to stay safe and have fun. Now get on your bike!
